"What are you making now???"

I get that a lot. Seems like I'm always starting a new project... without finishing the first 5 that I already had going... I think it's a disease or mental disorder or something. Nevercanfinishonethingbeforestartinganotheritis. Yep, that's it.

So anyway, to answer the question: I was cleaning out my dresser drawers and found that I had a lot of old t-shirts and sweatshirts that I didn't wear or want anymore. I was going to BURN THEM! (Huh?) No, not really... it's too wet out for that or else I totally would have (I'm kind of a pyro). So what do I do with them then? Well, since I always look twice at anything before I throw it away to see if I get any "creative" ideas first, I decided I was going to cut them apart and make a quilt out of them.

But as I started cutting and seam ripping, I thought 'Do I really want a quilt made out of my old t-shirts?'. I couldn't really make it as a gift for anyone else because it was all of my stuff from things that I used to do in school. But I didn't want to throw all of it out or give it to Goodwill either because a lot of the shirts were either so threadbare or full of holes that I didn't think it would be right. So I sat there on the floor covered in t-shirt scraps and pieces of thread and thought about it for a minute. Finally I asked my mom what she thought because I was coming up empty-handed. She told me "Well then, why don't you make one of those braided rugs?". BINGO! Thanks mom!

So I finished seam-ripping, cutting them into strips and ultimately destroying the t-shirts from my past. It was kind of bittersweet really... I miss those carefree days where all you had to worry about was winning the volleyball game, getting good grades, driving to town just to see if anyone you might know was there, or if you looked all right and if that good-looking country boy from the next town noticed you in all your tight Wrangler-clad glory (seriously, that was me) at the boy's basketball game last night. *sigh* To be young again :-)

But I also look forward to getting on with life. Seems like I'm stuck somewhere in between right now. I'm still in college so some of that old stuff still holds true, but with much more responsibility. I miss the old days sometimes but I'm sooo looking forward to putting school behind me for good and opening up the next chapter.

Sorry about the tangent.

I then randomly braided some of the strips together to kind of get the effect. So far I like it. The rug isn't going to have any rhyme or reason to it, I'm just going to sew the braids together however I happen to grab them. I plan to put it in the kitchen under the sink, so it doesn't really need to look too pretty I don't think.

So yeah, what was meant to be a quick little post turned into a little reminiscing on my part... Long story short, I'm making a braided rag rug. The end.

  1. Good idea Nicole! Have you heard of Hobby Farm? Well, they just put had an article in their last issue on braided rugs. It was in the Hobby Farm Home magazine. Anyways, they showed a couple different ways to do them. How are you doing it? I know my Grandma does it the way where you braid the strands and then stitch them together....I haven't made one since I was a kid. I will have to go through the rag box and get one started! Good thinkin' :)

  2. I should look that up! Some of them are really neat looking but I think mine will just be kind of random. Yeah I was thinking I would braid them, stitch the braids together and then thread the braids together in a circle (if that makes sense).
